Nanoscience and nanotechnology are at the forefront of modern research. The fast growing economy in this area requires experts who have an outstanding knowledge of nanoscience in combination with the skills to apply this knowledge in new products. A multidisciplinary scientific education is crucial to provide industry and research institutes with top quality experts who have a generic background in the different subdisciplines such as electronics, physics, chemistry, material science, biotechnology, and at the same time be experts in one particular field. This is what is offered in this master programme.

The program at KU Leuven is strongly research-oriented. K.U.Leuven has a strong research component in the areas of nanoscience,nanotechnology,nanomaterials, nanoelectronics and bionanotechnology. The research in this area is done in the research groups of the three faculties at KU Leuven.

Deze master wordt onder de naam Master in de nanowetenschappen en de nanotechnologie ook aangeboden in het Nederlands.


Admitted are Bachelor students in physics, applied physics, chemistry, biochemistry, electrical engineering, material science, bioscience engineering or a related discipline, with a proven background in mathematics and physics or chemistry. Students in their last year of such a bachelor programme will also be considered.

  • A minimum of 180 credits (equivalent to the ECTS credit system, i.e. corresponding to a minimum of 3 years of bachelor study) and a GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 75% of the scale maximum is required.
  • A good command of English, both spoken and written. All non-native speakers are required to submit an English proficiency test: IELTS (Academic version) overall band score of at least 7.0 or a TOEFL score of at least 580 (paper based) or 237 (computer based) or 92 (internet based).
  • The admission policy is intended to ensure equal opportunity of access to higher education for qualified European and third country students.


When successfully finished these studies, one is awarded the title of Master of Science (M.Sc) in Engineering.
